It could therefore be used at the end of a sporting match, where spectators for the winning team are cheerful while spectators for the losing team are disappointed.

It is thought to have stemmed from language used to advertise nightclubs with more than one room offering different styles of music. 

The phrase gradually evolved to adopt its metaphorical sense - just as a club can have several different atmospheres, the expression is used to refer to any place or situation where people have differing emotions.

It is usually used as a standalone phrase or reaction to a particular situation and will rarely be integrated into a sentence.
