Jolie and Macron met for over an hour, and are reported to have spoken in English about several topics, including violence against women, education for women and girls, and the refugee situation in Syria - topics about which both women have previously said they care deeply.

Jolie - who is well-known not only as an actress but also as an activist for women’s causes in her capacity as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Refugees - herself is reported to have requested the meeting.

The actress - who travelled to Paris with her six children (three of which are adopted - Maddox and Pax from Cambodia, and Zahara from Ethiopia - and three of which are her biological children with ex-husband Brad Pitt - Shiloh Nouvel, and twins Vivienne and Knox) - also took the opportunity to visit the Louvre art gallery.

After her visit to Paris, Jolie today (Wednesday 31 January) travelled to Brussels, in her capacity as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Refugees.

Brigitte Macron has no official role at the Elysée - and there were no official photographs taken of the event - but she has often taken an unofficial supporting role to the President and his office, such as becoming godmother to the birth of the first baby panda in France, which was hailed as a diplomatic success.
