Cost of living: French supermarket freezes price of 100 products

French supermarket chain Carrefour is freezing the price of 100 ‘everyday’ items until November 30 to “support French spending power” as the cost of living continues to rise.

The products concerned by the price cap include food and non-food own-brand items: fresh food, meat, jams, drinks, condiments, toiletries, detergents, some clothing and some small appliances.

Carrefour’s “anti-inflation challenge” is now in operation in all of its French stores and online.

The supermarket will also be rolling out its partnership with the ‘Nous anti-gaspi’ campaign from its trial stores in Ile-de-France to the rest of the country.

Nous anti-gaspi offers imperfect fruit and vegetables which may be a different shape or colour to the standard you might usually see, but which are still perfectly safe to eat.

These products are sold at a discount of up to 20%.

In introducing the price freeze, the chain is responding to a request from the French government asking supermarkets to ease the strain of inflation on consumer spending power.

E.Leclerc already has a price freeze in place on 234 products, and recently announced that it will maintain it until December 4.

Fuel suppliers have also been asked to offer money-saving measures to customers, and TotalEnergies has announced that it will be extending its summer discounts until the end of the year.

Drivers will be able to access a 20-cent-per-litre discount at TotalEnergies petrol stations between September 1 and November 1, and a 10-cent-per-litre discount from then until December 31.
