Newborn baby abandoned by roadside
Man delivering newspapers finds bag with girl inside after hearing strange noise
The little girl, who is estimated to be just days or weeks old, was discovered on Friday morning in a tote bag, well-wrapped up against the cold, said the gendarmerie of Mulhouse, according to reports by local news source FranceInfo.
Eric Koenig was delivering his usual newspaper round when he heard a strange noise, thinking at first that it was an animal, and that the noise was coming from the bin. Instead, he found the baby and called the emergency services.
The little one was not suffering from the cold, but had been placed near a rubbish bin - probably to increase the chances of her being found quickly, as it was rubbish collection day in the area - with a note inside pleading that she be taken care of by whoever discovered her.
“I was handing out the papers, but I had a real urge to look closer after I heard a strange noise,” explained Koenig to FranceInfo. “I thought at first it was an animal, but then I said to myself, no, it’s coming from the bin. Then I found the bag with the baby; she can be no more than two weeks old. I covered her in my coat, and called the fire brigade.”
The baby was then taken to the pediatric accident and emergency hospital (urgences) at Husenrain, Mulhouse. She is said to be in good health.
Police are now looking to determine what led to the abandonment and who the parents of the child might be.
