Switching your mutuelle top-up health insurance provider in France is now much more straightforward.
About 95% of all French residents have a mutuelle.
Knowing how and when you can change insurers can be helpful if your current mutuelle is no longer right for you.
Why switch mutuelle providers?
Annual premium hikes are common, and your policy price increase may seem more than reasonable to you.
In 2024, premiums increased by around 8%, largely due to the growing popularity of the 100% santé scheme for glasses and dental work, as well as better reimbursement for psychologist sessions. Further rises have taken place throughout 2025.
A switch may also be worthwhile if you may find a provider that offers better coverage options or a policy that matches your needs more closely.
New law makes switching easier
Thanks to a law introduced in 2020, switching your mutuelle top-up health insurance is now easier and more flexible than ever.
Previously, there were greater limitations on when consumers could leave their mutuelle, but the new legislation provides more freedom.
You can now cancel your contract at any time after the first full year without incurring any additional charges or penalties.
If you have held your policy for less than one year, you can only switch or cancel if your circumstances have changed, such as moving house or getting married.
How to cancel your current policy
There are three methods of cancelling your existing mutuelle policy.
Let your new insurer handle the cancellation
If you have already found a new mutuelle insurance provider, they can handle the cancellation for you, ensuring a smooth transition with no gap in coverage.
Send a cancellation letter
You can start the cancellation yourself by writing a letter to your current insurer indicating your wish to cancel the policy.
It is recommended to send the letter via registered post with a receipt confirmation (ask to send a Lettre recommandée avec accusé de réception).
Cancel your mutuelle policy online
If you are able to manage your mutuelle policy online, you can cancel directly from your account.
Your policy will be terminated one month from the date your insurer receives the cancellation letter or the date you cancelled online.
Choosing your new mutuelle
When selecting a new mutuelle top-up health insurance policy, it is important to prioritise coverage that suits your personal medical needs and avoid paying for unnecessary extras.
For example, if you do not ski or visit mountainous areas, you will likely not need coverage for mountain rescue services.
Consider factors such as your medical history, your family history, ongoing medications, and potential future treatments.
Depending on your health requirements, you may want to consider hospital cover, dental and eyecare, plus alternative care such as osteopathy and dieticians.
