Elysée Palace plans stolen

Details of major government buildings - including Paris Préfecture de Police - are included on missing USB memory stick

PLANS for the Elysée Palace, the Interior Ministry building and the Paris Préfecture de Police have gone missing after a USB stick was stolen from the car of a technician working on installing fibre-optic cables in the buildings.

The car had been parked outside the Gare de Lyon on Sunday while the man picked up a friend but when he returned to his car his briefcase with the USB memory sticks and hard disks had been stolen. The briefcase was later found empty.

A statement from the Interior Ministry admitted that the information included layout plans for the Elysée, the ministry itself and several large companies.

Le Parisien, which revealed the theft, said that information on more than 9,000 buildings was included on the memory stick and hard drives.

The details were confidential but not secret and were not encrypted - the ministry said the theft did not put the sites' security at risk and there were no details of who uses the offices shown in the plans.
