Sarkozy’s dogs 'chewed up Elysée'
Presidency officials refuse to confirm or deny if Salon d’argent furniture was gnawed at a cost of thousands
FORMER president Nicolas Sarkozy’s dogs have been accused of chewing up the furniture in the Elysée Palace’s prestigious Salon d'argent and peeing on the sofa when he was Minister of the Interior – but Elysée officials have refused to confirm or deny the story.
For a few days newspapers have been carrying stories based on a Mediapart report that Toumi the Chihuahua, Clara the Labrador and the terrier Dumbledor had gnawed their way through furniture in the room where Napoleon signed his abdication in 1815 and Felix Faure died in the arms of his mistress in 1899.
The Salon d’argent today is almost unchanged from the sumptuous room that was created in 1807 by Napoleon’s sister Caroline Murat.
According to Mediapart, the damage – especially to gilt-leaf covered chairs and chaise longues – cost the Mobilier National several thousand euros to repair but that did not include the cost of the braids that were needed, the silk covers or the time of Mobilier National staff.
However, the Elysée Palace press office refused to confirm or deny whether the stories were true or not.
