Residents of the Vendée are being warned to stay alert as a snake measuring up to five metres in length is on the loose in the department.
A resident of Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux reportedly ran over it when driving through the village on the way to a local fair on Friday (December 12).
The driver got out of his car and saw the snake move to a nearby riverbank.
The local mairie reported that it was between four and five metres long.
As of Tuesday (December 16) the snake had yet to be found, prompting the mairie to issue a statement on social media calling for locals to be careful of encountering it and that gendarmes were aware of the situation.
It is not clear what species of snake it is although, as no snake native to France reaches this size, it is likely to be an escaped (or released) pet.
Mayor Christian Henriet said the snake is “probably more dangerous to domestic animals than to us.”
Anyone who sees the snake is asked to contact the marie by phone at 02 51 00 70 12.
