Supermarkets must reveal profits
SUPERMARKETS will have to reveal details of their margins on produce after MPs backed a proposal to make prices more transparent.
The law should boost people’s purchasing power as supermarket margins have outstripped pay rises, with some products having margins of 30-50%. The Observatoire des Prix et des Marges said shops had “very comfortable” gross margins with no reduction from the collapse in prices paid to producers. In addition, research from
Casino has found shoppers are turning against hypermarkets, preferring instead to go to hard discount and neighbourhood stores as well as “drive” outlets where they shop online for later pick-up.
