Chaos as stag falls through garage roof at house in south-west France
The 150kg animal panicked as it could not escape, damaging the garage. The home in the Dordogne is at the foot of a cliff and the stag is thought to have fallen
A retired couple were rudely awakened at 4:00 on Monday morning (October 2) when a 150kg stag crashed through their garage roof.
The home of Mireille and Michel sits at the foot of a cliff in Saint-Cybranet, just south of Sarlat in the Dordogne in south-west France.
It is believed the animal fell four metres from the cliff crashing through the roof and onto the garage floor.
“My husband and I heard it thumping against the wall, it was very violent,” Mireille told local media outlet Sud Ouest.
In a panicked state, the stag charged against the walls – trampling bicycles, gardening tools and more.
Firefighters come to the rescue
Luckily, despite the chaos caused, neither the animal or homeowners were injured and the focus then turned to how to get the animal out of the garage safely.
Firefighters from nearby Sarlat-la-Canéda came to the rescue, with the help of a team from the Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB) – a public body dedicated to the protection and restoration of biodiversity in France.
It was decided the best option was anaesthetic and after three darts the animal was asleep and transported on a trailer.
By midday Monday, the animal had been released back into its natural environment.
