What are the tax effects of French or UK citizenship?
How will French nationality affect the tax situation of a British national?
We have UK state pensions plus income from UK lettings and ‘government’ pensions. We are over 65 and have S1s for healthcare and pay no social charges except on small deposit accounts. If, due to Brexit we took French citizenship while retaining our British citizenship how would this affect our tax position and liability to the social charges? P.W.
TAKING French nationality will not affect you in relation to your tax or social charges liabilities.
However as things currently stand, as a result of the Brexit there would generally be no change to income tax and the social charges for UK nationals permanently resident in the EU for the simple reason that the EU has never interfered in any country’s fiscal rights and all international taxation laws are enshrined in double tax treaties that have nothing to do with the EU.
Healthcare for expats might be an issue after Brexit, but it is to be hoped that reciprocal equal treatment would continue, as there are many French expats in the UK.
